History

Matt started karting when he was 10, competing in races at his local track at Sandown Park. At the age of 16 he made the move to cars, competing in the BARC Westfield Championship. In his first full season he finished 3rd in the championship, picking up his first podium finish at the age of 17. His first win came at the age of 18 at Snetterton in his second season. He followed this up with a win at Oulton Park but was unable to win the championship after 2 retirements.

In 2008 Matt made the step up to the Texaco Havoline Ginetta Championship, competing in a G20 with Optimum Motorsport. It was a steep learning curve and after a difficult start to the season Matt finished strongly, taking a podium at Donington Park and finishing 9th in the championship.

After taking a year out in 2009 Matt returned to the Ginetta G20 Challenge for Flowers Motorsport in 2010. Both Matt and the car steadily improved, finishing 5th in 2010, 3rd in 2011 and taking the title in 2012 with 9 wins along the way. Reliability was key for these results, going 52 races without a retirement and completing 33 consecutive top 6 finishes throughout 2011 and 2012.

In 2013 Matt moved up to the G40 class of the Ginetta GT5 Challenge, joining Academy Motorsport. In a competitive field Matt started well, finishing 5th on his debut. However it was a challenging year as a result of an accident at Oulton Park and Matt eventually finished the year 9th in the 29 car field.

Matt again came 9th in 2014 on a limited budget before having to take a year out in 2015. 2016 was one of Matt’s strongest years in the G40 car, taking 2 podiums in the Ginetta GT5 Challenge with Academy Motorsport, finishing 6th overall. Finishing 2nd at Silverstone with a 40 car field was the highlight of the year.

After another year out in 2017 Matt moved the BMW Compact Cup in a family run car for 2018. A competitive championship with over 40 cars, Matt came 8th in 2018 and 13th in 2019.

2020 was a turbulant year. But Matt managed an impressive 12th place overall.
